JavaScript is well-known for the many frameworks and tools created around it each week. React, which has been one of the most popular frameworks of recent times, suffers a similar fate. This causes new developers to feel overwhelmed when trying to dive into the technology.
There are many choices when it comes choosing the right React IDE, visualizer, or stylesheet. How do you choose the best? This is not an easy task.
This article will cover 11 tools within React. It is my intention to show you what options you have and how to make the most of them.
1. React Developers Tools
We'll start with the obvious, , which is one of the most widely used tools for react dev. It has just released its fourth version.
The components tabs in the dev tools will display the list of components as well as subcomponents that have been created from other components. These components will be available for you to inspect and edit, as well as their props. You can also measure the app's performance with the profiler tab.
Both are available on the DevTools standard tabs. However, they're intended for vanilla JS. This means that you won't get the same level of detail and capabilities as the extension's specialized tabs.
This extension is essential if you are serious about react-related development.
Try practicing this interactive tutorial to make sure you aren't missing any features.
2. React to Sight
You can also install to aid you with react-inspection tasks.
Let me explain:
After you have installed React DevTools you can return to the extension list and search ReactSight. It can be installed just as with other extensions. Click the big blue button.
If you're using local file URLs, ensure that "Allow access file URLs" is enabled in the extension settings of React Dev Tools as well as React Sight. Now you can open your React application or any React website. It's easy to install.
You'll find it in the DevTools as before. It's called "React Sight".
This tool allows you to visualize all the components you have created in a tree-like manner. This helps you understand their interconnectedness and allows you to hover over them to see their current state as well as props.
3. Bit
I have covered ( GIThub), with React in greater detail in another article . But it is still included because it is definitely one of the best options when it comes creating and sharing React components.
Bit is a CLI tool that allows you to publish React components after they have been isolated by Bit and shared with others. You can also search for components published by third parties. It's like Git meets NPM, but for React components.
The 3rd-party store lets you browse through a complete "marketplace" for components. These components are available for your benefit so that you don't need to read code to understand their purpose.
React components in bit.dev
You can view each component in detail.
Example: Bit's Live Playground
If you are interested in publishing your work rather than import it, Bit provides a simple command-line tool that lets you track individual changes to each component. You don't need to create a separate project just for this purpose. You can read more about Bit to create your component library.
Conclusion
These were the top 11 React tools. Not all of them can be used for web projects. Some are not visual, some are not web-based, and not all are intended to help you code. The point is that many of them can be combined to compliment each other.
Let me now ask you this: Which ones did I forget to mention? Is there a tool you use daily for React-related tasks that wasn't listed here? Please leave a comment below. I would love to see it!
If not, we'll see you at the next one!
