There are times when your usual undergarments either become too loose or tight with use and constant mobility. In this article you will find how to measure your own bra size so that you do not have to stand confused at the store trying to figure what suits you.

What Are The Different Sizes In Bra?

The bra size is in two parts:

1. One is an even number, which is the size of your band.

2. The other is a number represented by an alphabet, which indicates the cup size.

Keeping in focus that, here we are talking about lingerie bras, not the sports bra which is a different type of undergarments.

How Do You Know When You Are Not Wearing The Right Bra?

Sandi Simon, a bra fitting consultant indicates a few things that tell that the bra is not the right size.

  • Too tight underwire that breasts protrude from the sides.
  • Band keeps moving upwards.
  • Straps fall off the shoulders.
  • Underwire sits on the bust, whereas it must be under it.
  • Bra that slips upward upon lifting arms.

Steps To Measure Your Bra Size At Home

Step 1: Measure Your Band Size

With a tape measure, measure directly under the bust. Take readings in whole numbers.

  • If the reading is in even number, add 4 to your measurement. If your measurement is 32 your band size is 36.
  • If the measurement is in an odd number, add 5 to your reading. If your measurement is 33, your band size is 38.

Step 2: Measure Your Bust Size

Wrap the measuring tape round the bust, to the peak of your chest. This reading is also in the whole number.

Step 3: Measure Your Cup Size

To measure the cup size, subtract the band size from bust size, the remaining number is the cup size, which is indicated with an alphabet and not a number. For this refer to a cup size chart.

If your band size is 37 inches and bust size is 36 inches.

Band size - bust size = cup size

37 - 36 = 1

According to the cup size chart, 1 is A.

So your bra size is 36A.

If the size that you have measured is either too tight or too loose, you can use a bra size chart to know the one that fits you. You need to move up, down, and left to right to find the right band and cup size.

For example, if size the 34C is too loose then try the size 36B.

How Do You Know If The Bra Fits Perfectly?

  • When wearing the bra, lean at the waist forward, make sure your bust is inside the cups.
  • The front and back of your bra should be level.
  • Insert a finger under the band, the area should allow only one finger. This means that the bra should not be too loose.
  • When you have tied the hooks, tighten the straps. The straps should not fall off the shoulders.
  • In the mirror, stand sideways. Your breast should come between the shoulders and your elbow.
  • If your breasts overflow from the top or peak through the band, the cups are too small. This size is not for you.
  • If there is too much gap in the middle of the bust, the cups are too large.
  • If the back of the bra moves up, you need a tighter band.

Why Do You Need To Measure Your Bra?

With time, our bodies change. There are many factors which can cause changes in the size of breasts. Some of them could be breast feeding, pregnancy, weight changes, and age related changes.

If you feel that your breast size changes, it is recommended to measure them every six months.

There are other factors on which the bra size is dependent such as, different brands, the fabric, style of straps, padding, and the hook placement.

Conclusion

Wearing an ill-fitting bra can ruin your day. Repeatedly adjusting the different parts of the bra and making sure it doesn't show through your outfit, becomes a headache. It is not just about the looks, an unsuitable bra can also cause aches in the body, such as, headache, back or neck pain, pain in the shoulders, breast pain, and bad posture.
