Eddie Redmayne plays the first identifiable person, Lili Elbe, to undergo sex reassignment surgery in his new film The Danish Girl.
But the journey, taking place in the late 1920s and early 1930s, was fraught with danger on all sides.
The new trailer for the film, set for release on November 27 in the US, sees the actor confront potential incarceration or institutionalization for seeking the surgery.
In the clip, Redmayne playing Lili says to Alicia Verkander (who plays her wife Gerda): 'He wants to lock me up.'
The trailer cuts to Gerda talking to a man in an institutional building: 'We trusted you. We came to you for help.'
The real life Lili was a Danish transgender woman who was born as Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener.
